This started from wishing that Dance Central had a character creator like Rock Band did, since they are by the same game studio and appear to use the same character modeling.  Since we had a ton of  fun making a giant mega-band with all our usual characters when we played RB3, this art homage happened. In the RB character creator, you would pick from unique pieces, as well as clothing worn by the game's stock characters - this is reflected here by some clear style cues from the DC crews in keeping with the overall feel of things.

The concept evolved a little bit and there is a bare-bones story to what is, if not an original title, a spiritual sequel or spin-off game.  It takes place in a dying city (a la Detroit) and begins at the local dance academy that trained members of the top six dance crews in the city.  Your player character (in first person POV during cutscenes) is the new student sent into the city to test your mettle against these alumni, as well as deliver a message from the academy's headmaster, which is an invitation to some kind of reunion.  You learn a bit about the various rivalries, friendships, and personalities of the crews as you visit them throughout the city.  Each crew has established a home base at a specific venue, all of which are reclaimed spaces of a city that is slowly being abandoned.  These venues are bright spots in an otherwise dismal urban landscape.
